Environmental performance

Environmental performance

At Mondi, we are conscious of the environmental concerns linked to our business and our processes. We recognise the role that industry can and should play in managing our planet’s resources while minimising, and even reversing, global environmental degradation.

Highlights 2010

  • All environmental commitments relating to waste, emissions to air and water met and exceeded
  • Specific CO2e emissions down 23% since 2004 with avoided CO2 emissions of 4.9 million tonnes in 2010 and absolute emissions down 16% compared with 2004 base year
  • Specific energy consumption (paper and pulp manufacturing) down 11% since 2004
  • Use of renewable energy generation increased to 55%
  • Electrical self-sufficiency at 79% with more than 90% of electricity consumed generated by combined heat power (CHP) boilers
  • Product carbon footprint (PCF) method established and externally verified
  • Water footprint data reported

Taking stock: performance against commitments

This scorecard summarises our performance against our sustainable development commitments in respect of environmental performance.

Commitment

Performance

Aggregate target of a 15% reduction in energy consumption for pulp and paoer making per unit of saleable production from our mills, against a 2004 base year, to be met in 2014

11% reduction achieved between 2004 and 2010

Aggregate target of a 15% reduction in CO2e equivalent emissions per unit of saleable production from our mills, against a 2004 base year, to be met in 2014

23% reduction achieved between 2004 and 2010

Aggregate target of a 30% reduction in effluent load (measured as chemical oxygen demand (COD)) into receiving waters from our mills, against a 2005 base year

34% reduction achieved between 2005 and 2010

Aggregate target of a 30% reduction
in adsorbable organic halogens (AOX) emissions into receiving waters from our mills, against a 2005 base year

63% reduction achieved between 2005 and 2010

Reduce the total reduced sulphur (TRS) emissions from our mills to the atmosphere by 65%, against a 2005 base year

70% reduction achieved between 2005 and 2010

Reduce the total waste to landfill by 20% from our mills, against a 2005 base year

36% reduction achieved between 2005 and 2010

As a business, we are committed to minimising our impacts on the natural environment, on living and non-living natural systems, including ecosystems, land, air and water. We are determined to be resource-efficient, to conserve our high conservation value (HCV) natural resources, increase our use of raw materials from renewable resources, develop cleaner production methods and play our part in combatting climate change by improving energy efficiency and reducing our GHG emissions.

We are committed to responsible, sustainable forestry. In recognition of this as a pressing, global concern we have developed a separate section on Responsible forestry and climate change.

These commitments are measured based on the performance of all material operations that were active during the commitments period (please refer to the Scope of report section for detailed information about the site listings for material mills as well as the dates of acquisitions, closures and sales). We have included the performances of our recent acquisitions, Lohja (Finland) and Tire paper mill (Turkey) as well as Stambolijski (Bulgaria) (acquired in 2007 and re-commissioned in 2010) in measuring the commitments. As such, we included their historic data (before being acquired by Mondi) into our performance as well. The rationale for this is that as part of our due diligence for new acquisitions, we have processes in place to assess the environmental performance close to - if not completely aligned with - our standards. We therefore believe that including their historic performances into the Group statistics would be refelctive of our standards and would give a truer picture of the progress towards our commitments.
