Ecosystem management plans

Mondi’s Ecosystem Management Plans (EMPs) enable management teams responsible for specific forest estates to put effective strategies in place to protect and manage biodiversity and functioning ecosystems. The Group’s high standard of monitoring and reporting adopted in their EMPs reflects the increasing worldwide importance given to ecosystem services and their value – and contributes to Mondi’s considerable achievements in biodiversity and ecosystem management.

New steam turbine for Richards Bay mill

Mondi is in the process of installing a new steam-powered turbine at its Richards Bay mill, which will result in many positive spin-offs for the Group, the country’s electrical power supply and the environment. The new turbine is one of Mondi’s approved energy-related investments, which together total approximately €300 million.

The project forms part of Mondi’s drive to increase self-sufficiency and further improve energy efficiency.

Mondi’s internal water impact assessments

In 2012, an operational water impact questionnaire was developed by Mondi which considers the needs and impacts of Mondi’s pulp and paper mills. The questionnaire is designed to increase understanding of our impact on water sources and our vulnerability to changes in water availability, allocation and costs.

This is vital information for us and for our stakeholders.

Driving innovation to become ‘as green as it gets’

This year Mondi hosted its second annual Green Event – an educational forum to address environmental issues, particularly those related to the pulp, paper and packaging industry. The event provides us with the opportunity to engage with our stakeholders and encourage knowledge sharing – an important driver of green innovation.

It is through our promotion of environmentally preferable purchasing, as well as the conservation of renewable resources in our production processes, that we are now closer than ever to achieving our goal of clean production, of making our company, and the environment, ‘as green as it gets’.

Russian logging camps: Keeping our employees safe and healthy

Working in the logging operations in Russia’s vast and remote Komi forests is challenging to say the least. When a Mondi employee lost his life in a fire in 2009, the importance of improving conditions in our logging camps was highlighted.

Following an assessment of the logging camps, Mondi took immediate action to establish a set of minimum standards for the setting up and running of the camps. Employees now live in safe, comfortable and fully-equipped units situated in well-planned and serviced camps.
