Mondi provides raw materials for a new sustainable product, Afcofish, which was introduced onto the European market during 2008. Manufactured using 100% recyclable and biodegradable corrugated board, Afcofish is used by Carrefour Spain to transport fresh fish from port to store, eliminating the need to use traditional EPS containers.
Our Coatings business has also developed an innovative antimicrobial packaging solution under the brand name Sanocoat. The product offers a number of advantages over conventional alternatives, including the prevention of germ-growth, bacteria reduction, inhibition of mould, odour control and increased shelf life.
As the volumes of pre-packed foods sold in supermarkets and stores worldwide increase, so the potential risks of contact with harmful bacteria from inappropriately stored or consumed foods increases. Sanocoat provides a way to reduce these risks and extend the shelf life of products such as fresh, baby and snack foods, healthcare and pharmaceutical products.
Sanocoat is not manufactured from biodegradable materials, but supports our customers’ and consumers’ ‘green’ objectives by extending product shelf life in stores and their ‘fridge life’ at home. This in turn helps to reduce the large amounts of food thrown away and prevents unnecessary pollution caused along the supply chain.
