Accountability for our sustainable development (SD) policies, systems, practices, commitments and actions is assured at every significant level of our business through the dual listed company (DLC) SD committee, DLC executive committee, Mondi SD leadership panel and five global specialist network groups.

The DLC executive committee

This committee is chaired by our chief executive, David Hathorn. It has collective executive responsibility for sustainability performance. Our Group technical director, Ladimir Pellizzaro, is also a committee member and, has specific responsibility for SD policy, advice and support.

The DLC SD committee

The DLC SD committee (a sub-committee of the Board) is chaired by an independent non-executive director, Stephen Harris. Its members include our chief executive, David Hathorn. The DLC SD committee provides assurance to the boards of Mondi Limited and Mondi plc that appropriate systems and practices are in place to deal effectively with sustainability risks and sustainability opportunities. It is responsible for ensuring that the Group’s sustainable development strategy, policies and commitments remain relevant and in line with global best practice.

The DLC SD committee met six times during 2009, to review Group policies and our progress against the our SD commitments. It also oversees all safety, health, environment, forestry and community matters across the Group. Business line management holds primary responsibility and accountability for SD performance, with support from the SD function, provided directly and through a series of specialist networks.

During 2009 the DLC SD committee:

• Reviewed the material SD risks and challenges that Mondi faces
• Considered reports on specific issues
• Challenged management about lessons learned from serious and significant incidents
• Assessed the potential impact of climate change regulation
• Regularly assessed Group performance against our SD commitments and key performance indicators

The Committee reviewed our annual SD summary report and recommended that the board approve its publication. This report sets out our SD targets and performance against them. The Committee also assessed and approved its own performance against defined terms of reference.

The Mondi SD leadership panel

The Mondi SD leadership panel comprises divisional management and SD experts from across the Group. Chaired by the Group technical director, the panel met three times during 2009. It is responsible for advising and supporting the executive committee and operations managers. It also promotes sustainability issues, monitors changes in stakeholders’ concerns and requirements, measures sustainability performance and identifies high priority issues.

Global specialist network groups

We currently have five global specialist network groups: the safety, health and occupational hygiene network; the environmental network; the energy network; the black liquor recovery boiler network and the product stewardship network. Each comprises specialists from across the Group, who provide a breadth of valuable expertise and knowledge. Through their scope of work they can accelerate the pace of change on SD topics of Group-wide importance during regular meetings through the year.
