Management systems, policies and processes

We aspire to be the best performing paper and packaging company in the world and have rigorous corporate governance policies and practices in place to ensure that sustainability informs every strategic and operational management decision we make.

Sustainable development (SD) policies

We believe that making sustainability a reality means considering and acting responsibly on the environmental, safety, health, economic and social implications of every decision we make. Our SD policy outlines our overall strategy and is supported by our sector policies, which identify seven key SD aspects:

  1. Sustainable forestry.
  2. Environmental performance.
  3. Climate change minimisation.
  4. Product stewardship.
  5. Corporate citizenship.
  6. Global employment.
  7. Safety and occupational health.

All seven sector policies apply across the operations we own and manage. We invest in training, education, consultation, audit and other resources to ensure that they are widely understood and implemented. The DLC SD committee reviewed our sector policies in January 2010, confirming that they are still relevant and cover all necessary areas.

Sustainable Development Management System (SDMS)

Our SDMS was introduced in 2007, following the ISO PDCA model. It provides a robust and comprehensive mechanism for ensuring effective sustainability governance and implementing our SD sector policies. Our SDMS is owned at Group level and applies to:

  1. Facilities and activities that we own and operate (including those in which we hold a majority share).
  2. New developments, mergers, acquisitions and businesses that we plan to divest.
  3. Activities undertaken by contractors on Mondi sites or while under our management.

Our SDMS is implemented in different ways across the Mondi Group, depending on the nature and level of risks faced in each of our operations. It comprises:

  1. The SD policy and seven sector policies.
  2. The SD governance standard, which links our management standards to our corporate governance structure
  3. Nine management standards, defining our governance requirements and providing a basis for the development, enhancement and application of our SD principles
  4. Ten operating standards, defining minimum requirements for good operational management and control across all our policy areas and providing guidance about the implementation of the SDMS at Group, divisional and operational level
  5. Comprehensive performance requirements setting out guidelines for implementation of the SDMS
  6. Our quantifiable short, medium and long-term SD commitments.

The chart below explains how our SDMS works in practice.

In 2007, Environmental Resources Management Certification and Verification Services (ERM CVS) conducted an independent review of our SDMS. They concluded that our SD policies, standards and performance requirements provide an effective way to meet the requirements of the following external standards and commitments:

  1. BS 8900:2006 Guidance for Managing Sustainable Development.
  2. ISO 14001: Specification for Environmental Management System.
  3. OHSAS 18001: Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
  4. OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.
  5. Principles and Criteria for Forest Stewardship.
  6. SA 8000:2001 Social Accountability.
  7. Sustainable Forest Products Industry Working Group.
  8. The Forests Dialogue (TFD).
  9. UNEP International Declaration on Cleaner Production.
  10. United Nations Global Compact.
  11. United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  12. WBCSD/WRI Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
  13. World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

We monitor updates and any potential changes to these documents to make sure that we stay in compliance with them.

Reporting system

In 2007, we introduced a new SD reporting and information system, MORIS, closely aligned with our SD commitments. Comprehensive reporting guidelines were finalised during 2009 and used to frame the scope, frequency and content of our sustainability reports.
During 2009 we established MORIS as a reliable, robust and useful tool for internal and external reporting. We now use it to measure and monitor performance against our commitments. We also use MORIS data to produce tailored reports, which help us to address performance gaps in each SD area.

Public commitments

As part of our SDMS, the SD leadership panel developed a set of public commitments, which were then approved by the DLC executive committee. The commitments take into account public concerns, significant risks and other legal requirements relating to sustainability issues. They cover the full breadth of our SD agenda and demonstrate our commitment to sustainability. The SD leadership panel assesses our progress towards meeting the commitments at its regular meetings.
