Mondi structure

Europe & International Division

Mondi's Europe & International Division is structured in three business streams - Corrugated, Bags & Specialities and Uncoated fine paper (UFP).

Corrugated

Mondi is a market-leading producer of corrugated packaging, virgin and recycled containerboard.

Virgin fibre-based containerboard and recycled fibre-based containerboard, also referred to as kraftliner and testliner, are used primarily to make corrugated board, which is then converted into corrugated packaging solutions, for instance for the food and agricultural industries.

We also manufacture a full range of converted products, including sheets and converted corrugated products such as regular cases, die-cut cases, folded-glued cases, litho-laminated products, trays and displays.

Approximately a quarter of the volume of containerboard produced by Mondi is consumed internally in the production of corrugated packaging and, to a smaller extent, flexible products.

Our virgin containerboard operations are based in Russia and Slovakia. Our recycled containerboard operations are based in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and UK.

Mondi has a network of 28 plants making corrugated packaging materials. Our 20 box plants are equally spread between western and eastern Europe.

Bags & Specialities

Mondi is a leading producer of kraft paper and the global leader in the production of industrial bags.

Kraft paper is a high strength paper produced out of virgin-based fibre. It is mainly used in the production of industrial bags, primarily for the building industry, and in the production of consumer bags, paper-based flexible packaging and wrapping paper.

Mondi converts kraft paper into bags at around 40 converting operations around the world and we offer a broad product portfolio of industrial bags such as ultra-strong bags and air permeable bags with sophisticated closure techniques. Our main markets are in industries such as building and chemicals, as well as the food, feed and seed industries.

Mondi manufactures kraft paper in the Czech Republic, Austria, Sweden, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Poland. 20 of its converting operations are in Western Europe, nine in Emerging Europe, five in North America, five in the Middle East and North Africa, and one in Asia.

In the field of Specialities, Mondi is a leading producer of release liner and extrusion coating in Europe and holds a strong position in the speciality plastic film and printed consumer bag markets.

We provide efficient barrier materials for a variety of industries, such as the paper & converting, imaging, automotive, building and FMCG industries. Our extrusion-coated protective materials provide barriers against such things as moisture, light, oxygen, grease, gas and odours.

We produce release liners that are customised for specific product requirements. These include tapes, labels, graphic arts, hygienic, medical and industrial products. In this market segment, there is particular emphasis on quality and technical specifications.

Our flexible packaging portfolio includes films and laminates as well as converted products such as stand-up pouches, paper and plastic bags, and active packaging for convenience food. We are a leading innovator for consumer goods such as food, pet food and hygiene.

Our extrusion coating operations are located in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Sweden and the UK. Our release liner operations are based in Austria, the Netherlands, Germany and the USA. Our consumer flexibles business operates from Austria, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and UK.

Uncoated fine paper (UFP)

We are one of the world's leading manufacturers of uncoated fine paper.

Our products include papers for inkjet laser printing in the office and at home, as well as specialist ranges for use in the stationery and printing industries.

Many of our products are leading in their particular markets. Color Copy, for example is Western Europe's leading colour laser brand, while Snegurochka is a leading office paper brand in Russia.

We have paper-manufacturing operations in Austria, Israel, the Slovak Republic and Russia.

South Africa Division

Mondi was founded in South Africa in 1967 and the South Africa Division is made up of forestry, pulp and uncoated fine paper operations.

We're the number one provider of uncoated fine paper across Africa and the largest producer in South Africa. Our ROTATRIM brand is the leading office paper in South Africa.

We produce our uncoated fine paper at our Merebank mill in Durban and in 2007 we generated approximately 0.5 million tonnes.

We have forestry operations in the KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga provinces. Of the total 357,000 hectares of forest available to us in South Africa, 68% is utilised for forestry operations and the remainder is open areas. All of our South African forests are certified according to Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) criteria.

In 2006, 1.9 million tonnes of pulp was produced in our Richards Bay mill.
