Mondi Hadera Paper plays a key part in AIPM’s (American Israeli Paper Mills Ltd) Green Globe Prize

One of Israel's most important World Environment Day initiatives is the Green Globe Awards, sponsored by Life and the Environment, Israel's umbrella organization for some 100 environmental NGOs. During the high-profile Green Globe Award ceremony, special prizes are presented to organisations, projects and individuals who have taken significant action on behalf of the environment in Israel.

One of the main themes of this year's ceremony was better environmental performance and for the first time an industrial company has won a prestigious Green Globe Award. AIPM, joint owners of Mondi Hadera Paper with international paper and packaging group Mondi, was awarded the prize for environmental achievements including recycling, wastewater and sewage treatment, odour problems in the Hadera River as well as the switch to natural gas for energy generation.

Mondi Hadera Paper contributed to AIPM’s environmental achievements in a number of ways, including:

• Switching from heavy fuel oil to natural gas, which dramatically decreased the SO2, NOx and particulate emissions
• Improving the overall machine runnability, which increased total production and thereby reduced specific water consumption
• Increasing the dry matter content of the filler concentrate, which resulted in a decrease of fresh water consumption and effluent
• Pre-treating (pre-digestion) the effluent of the starch system before transferring it to the waste water treatment, which resulted in a decrease of the chemical oxygen demand (COD).
