Climate change and energy

We share the concerns of the international community about climate change, and believe that industry should play an important role in worldwide efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Our Group-wide energy strategy commits us to ensuring that our financial and environmental energy costs are as low as possible. Our vision is fourfold that we should:

  • manage energy price volatility effectively;
  • consistently improve the energy-efficiency of our production processes;
  • increase the proportion of power that we produce ourselves;
  • increase the overall share of energy from renewable sources as a proportion of the energy we use.

Stabilising the cost of energy and reducing carbon emissions

By actively using the provisions set out in Article 17 of the Kyoto Protocol of 1997, we are able to smooth out fluctuations in the cost of energy and reduce carbon emissions from energy generation, so enabling us to plan our future investments strategically.

Improving energy efficiency

One of our most significant environmental commitments is to reduce our specific fossil fuel CO2 emissions by 15% from the 2004 figure by 2014. In 2007, we achieved an 11% reduction on the 2004 figure. This is a 6% reduction in total fossil fuel CO2 emissions from 5.19 million tonnes in 2004 to 4.86 million tonnes in 2007.

Energy sources and consumption

We have reported a 3% improvement in our energy usage per tonne of product produced since 2004, with 41% of our total energy being supplied by biomass. We are using the tools provided in the Kyoto Protocol of 1997 to assist us in meeting our commitments.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Our industry has the potential to reduce its carbon impact by replacing fossil fuels such as coal, lignite (brown coal) or gas with renewable biological power sources such as our own produced biomass, black liquor, sludge and other renewable fuels. Currently, 41% of our total energy is from biomass.

Such efforts have also enabled us to reduce our total CO2 emissions from fossil fuels by 6% from 2004 to 2007.
