External assurance and performance monitoring

Independent assurance

Mondi firmly believes in both internal and external assurance. See the Governance of sustainability section for the role of Internal Audit.

Parts of this report have been independently assured by Environmental Resources Management Limited (ERM). ERM's scope of assurance includes:

• an assessment as to whether we have appropriately reported selected performance data, including a review fo the underlying data collection, aggregation and validation of the sytems and processes in place;
• the performance rating given for each of Mondi's sustainability commitments; and
• the status of compliance of this report against the GRI G3 Guidelines Level B requirements.

The following logo indicates the selected disclosures which have been subject to independent assurance. Full details of the independent assurance, including a list of data parameters that were reviewed, may be found on ERM's Assurance statement.

Addressing recommendations from our independent assuror, 2009

Following the independent assurance process conducted by ERM for our Sustainable Development Report 2009, recommendations were made to Mondi to:

• "Expand reporting boundaries to include all Mondi sites." Currently only our environmentally material sites are included in the energy and environment reporting, but we are planning to include all operations in the scope of environment/energy reporting from 2011 onwards, aligned with the new base year for our next set of commitments.
• "A firm timeline needed to be set for newly acquired operations to be included in Mondi's reporting." We have since set fixed timelines for incorporating the performance of the new acquisitions into the Group statistics. These timelines differ for each sustainable development reporting area (for instance, we allow a two-year timeline for safety performance and a one-year timeline for environment - both to be finally decided by management on a case-by-case basis.) By distinguishing between newly acquired and older Mondi sites in performance data, we aim to present a full picture of Mondi's performance, so that the standardised performance of existing operations is not tainted by the weaker performance of new operations.

Independent performance monitoring

In addition to the external assurance associated with our Sustainable Development Report, regular external audits are also undertaken at our environmentally significant production operations for the purpose of maintaining our ISO 14001, Forestry Stewardship Council™ (FSC™), FSC™ Chain-of-Custody, Programme for the Endorsement of Forestry Certification schemes (PEFC) and PEFC Chain-of-Custody certifications. Currently, all operations, except Stambolijski in Bulgaria, which is in the process of achieving certification and the most recently acquired Tire paper mill in Turkey and Lohja in Finland, are either ISO 14001 certified and/or have FSC™ or PEFC Chain-of-Custody certification in place. Furthermore, a significant number of our operations are OHSAS 18001 and ISO 9001 certified.
