Sustainex - Sustainable packaging

Mondi Coatings & Consumer Packaging offers sustainable extrusion-coated and extrusion-laminated packaging materials that use biopolymers based on renewable resources instead of PE. Under the brand name Sustainex we sell versatile biodegradable and sustainable packaging materials featuring excellent sealability, gas and grease barrier, and thermal resistance.

The material used for Sustainex depends on the requirements of the packaging itself. For example, Sustainex can replace regular PE in a typical multilayer sandwich laminate between two Kraft Paper layers.

Consumers' shift to more sustainable packaging is a valuable contribution towards more sustainable resource use and a sustainable society. Therefore Mondi Coatings & Consumer Packaging attaches strategic relevance to biopolymers and customer-specific consultancy is of high priority during the whole production process of sustainable packaging materials.  

Biopolymers used as Sustainex coating materials are based either on starch or native oil esters. These biopolymers correspond to the regulations of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (94/62/EC) and their compostability is certified according EN 13432. Furthermore, Sustainex is defined to be a food contact material according to EU legislation (Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 and European Directive 2002/72/EC).

Compliant with EN 13432 means…

The whole certification and testing procedure of packaging products according to EN 13432 takes at least eight months. Packaging products are compliant with EN 13432 when the following four requirements are fulfilled:

  1. Disintegration
  2. Biodegradation
  3. No negative effect on the composting process
  4. No negative effect on compost quality (e.g. a low level of heavy metals)
