Two-ply bags in Indonesia
Leading Indonesian cement producers obtained an on-average savings of 15% for total packaging costs.
Indonesia, with a population of 240 million spread across approximately 16,000 islands, is developing rapidly, and so is its cement industry. Annual production of cement is at 48 million tonnes, which because of various infrastructure constraints, is usually distributed in 40 or 50-kg paper bags.
Annual consumption of multi-wall three-ply bags is roughly 450 million, which represents a demand for sack kraft paper of roughly 75,000 tonnes/year.
Mondi has been active in Indonesia since 1998; today we are the single largest supplier of sack kraft paper for cement packaging end use there. In recent years, Mondi’s high-quality sack kraft papers have, in many cases, been used for three-ply bag applications. However, due to overcapacity of cement production following the Asian crisis, cement companies have had to focus on cost cutting, optimisation of operations and overall efforts to boost profit. This in turn has resulted in a heightened interest in and regular use of the proven Mondi two-ply concept.

Mondi has actively promoted two-ply bags and recently both PT. Semen Gresik and PT. Holcim Indonesia have started to use Advantage Select for two-ply bags. Other producers are now following suit.
Compared with conventional three-ply bags, two-ply bags offer comparable performance along with total packaging savings of an average of 15%. |
