2010 WWF Paper Company Environmental Index

Mondi ranks 1st in WWF’s Paper Company Environmental Index

On 14 July 2010, WWF has published its Paper Company Environmental Index. The index, which is a rating tool for measuring fine paper companies’ global environmental footprint, analysed the performance in responsible fibre sourcing, emissions in the manufacturing process (clean manufacturing) and transparency. The criteria apply to both policy and production, thus measuring each company´s targets and actual performance. The index also includes companies’ own operations as well as the supply chain; for example, market pulp bought for production of the end product.

The WWF Environmental Index addresses the needs of paper product buyers who want to know about the environmental performance of the companies that produce the products they use, as well as the paper industry stakeholders (e.g. investors, NGOs) seeking information on the environmental and risk profile.

WWF invited ten companies to participate in this voluntary assessment, to which five companies chose to respond. Mondi ranked 1st in this assessment of the fine paper companies.

First, the index measured the forest footprint - how much recycled fibre, chain-of-custody certified virgin fibre (known sources) and credibly-certified fibre in the global production is used.

Second, the index measured the climate and water footprint in clean manufacturing - i.e. the energy use, the fossil carbon dioxide emissions, dry waste into landfill, water consumption, effluent treatment and pollution reduction from the bleaching process.

Third, the index measured how transparent companies are – in particular regarding environmental management systems (EMS) certification, GRI reporting, fibre sourcing and disclosure of emission data.

In its assessment, WWF has identified areas in which there is potential for improvement. We are currently working on achieving better results in these areas in view of the next WWF Environmental Index.
