Barrier against microorganisms

Antimicrobial products and active substances provide effective protection against infections and are therefore becoming more strategically important, particularly in areas where hygiene is relevant. At the delicatessen counters of the German department store chain Galeria Kaufhof, Mondi’s antimicrobial packaging material Sanocoat® is already successfully in use.

Galeria Kaufhof relies on Sanocoat® for delicatessen
When selecting products, Galeria Kaufhof places great emphasis on top quality and freshness. Famous as being one of the best shops for international articles, exclusive ranges and novel ideas, Galeria Kaufhof relies on innovative packaging trends, especially for delicatessen products. In its fresh food lines in particular, Galeria Kaufhof sells seldom specialities of the highest quality. Expectations towards the performance of packaging are therefore extremely high.

The antimicrobial effect of Sanocoat convinced Galeria Kaufhof to start using wrapping paper coated with Sanocoat for cold meats, ham and cheese at the beginning of 2009. Galeria Kaufhof is committed to delivering the best quality at all times and therefore believes that the introduction of Sanocoat will provide its customers with another positive, valuable service.

After manufacture at Mondi, the wrapping paper will get delivered to Bausch in Winsen/Germany, specialist subcontractor for sheeting. In the near future, the packaging for fresh fish in the Galeria Kaufhof branches will also be available with Sanocoat.

Sanocoat® guarantees longer product freshness
In addition to providing a surface for advertising messages, quality packaging solutions primarily ensure protection against moisture, oxygen, gases, grease, and odours. Sanocoat, Mondi’s antimicrobial packaging material, also protects the products against bacteria and therefore provides key benefits for consumers. It inhibits the growth and kills a wide range of different germs.

As a result, bacterial growth (E. coli, S. aureus) is significantly reduced and mould formation (Candida albicans) prevented. The antimicrobial constituents of Sanocoat therefore not only guarantee that the quality of the packaged fresh products is maintained over a longer period of time, but also contribute significantly to preventing infection.

ISEGA, the renowned testing institute, has analysed Sanocoat and confirmed that it meets the requirements of EU Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 and is therefore particularly suitable for use in the food sector and complies with the current hygiene and product safety standards in the packaging and food industry.

Trend towards antimicrobial materials
In Japan and the United States, antimicrobial materials and surfaces are no longer an innovation in many industries. Given microorganisms' extreme resistance to antibiotics, the demand for antimicrobial materials is now on the rise in Europe, too. "In the packaging and food industry in particular, product safety and freshness play a vital role. Furthermore, stringent hygiene and product safety standards apply here. To satisfy these requirements, we have carried out various tests and implemented innovative research findings," says Dr. Michael Strobl, Managing Director of the Mondi Consumer Coatings product segment. "The marked trends towards antimicrobial coatings for packaging materials have led Mondi to examine microbial packaging barriers in greater depth. Our Sanocoat antimicrobial coating is the result of this research and development process," adds Strobl.

Sustainable products with future value
Sanocoat represents a new generation of antimicrobial packaging. Its features of inhibiting bacterial growth, extending the product's shelf life and freshness, and guaranteeing odour control make Sanocoat a versatile, antimicrobial packaging material. "In addition to wrapping paper for fresh products, we also see huge potential for our innovative Sanocoat packaging in other areas, such as the baby food or snack industry, medical and pharmaceutical products, and industrial applications," concludes Strobl.
