Forests play an important role in the world's ecological balance. On the one hand they can help to reduce CO₂ in the atmosphere on the other hand they are ecosystems of huge biodiversity.

Therefore responsible forest practices are vital for our business and we have been taking this as the top priority ever since. Our sales organisation is FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council™) certified as well as PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forests) certified. Our mills have the following forest certifications:

• Mondi SCP, Slovakia: FSC™, PEFC
• Mondi Syktyvkar, Russia: FSC™
• Mondi Merebank, South Africa: FSC™

As a fully integrated paper supplier a huge share of the wood used for the pulp necessary for paper production comes from our own forests.

• Mondi manages a forest area of 2,5 million soccer pitches responsibly
• Mondi plants 40 million trees each year ensuring sustained growth

Mondi enhances biodiversity and ecosystem-services throughout its operations - We are working with the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa to create and manage ecological networks in the forests in order to protect the biodiversity of the habitat.

FSC™ stands for “Forest Stewardship Council™”, one of the most important international certification systems for forest management. The Council’s seal is awarded to wood products from all over the world that are the result of guaranteed exemplary forest management practices and thereby supports the long-term preservation of forest and their biological diversity. Our forests in South Africa were awarded full FSC™ certification in the 1990s, and for the FSC™ certification of our leased forest in Russia we received the WWF’s prestigious Panda Award in 2006 for the second time. The award is granted on the basis of international principles and criteria that take into account ecological and economic requirements as well as social factors.

PEFC: The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.
