Air
As a global leader in the manufacturing of paper and packaging, Mondi maintains its steadfast commitment to the development of sustainable products and initiatives for the improvement of its environmental performance. The introduction of Nautilus® SuperWhite CO2 neutral to the Green Range product portfolio marks a natural progression in Mondi’s continuing focus on the responsible management and use of natural resources. Mondi´s approach is emission reduction before offsetting.
Mondi´s CO2 reduction initiatives:
We calculate and report our emissions to air according to the recommendations of the environmental consultancy ERM, which is based on the international assurance and audit standards ISAE 3000, ISO14064:3, and ISO 19011. Our emission reduction goal until 2014 is
-15% of CO2 emissions against a 2004 baseline, which we achieved already at the end of 2009.
We achieve this through:
- Energy efficiency projects
- Substitution of fossil fuels with energy from biomass. The share of energy from biomass within Mondi was of 53% at the end of 2009. In 2009, we saved 800.000 to of CO2 as a consequence of our emissions reduction projects.
In 2009, we saved 800.000 to of CO2 as a consequence of our emissions reduction projects.
How does Mondi compensate for emissions of Nautilus®SuperWhite CO2 neutral
We neutralize emissions of our 100% recycled premium paper by supporting two highly accredited projects:

Why does Mondi not compensate for emissions in Europe?
Climate change is a global problem. Climate neutrality is based on the principle that greenhouse gas emissions have a damaging effect on the climate – globally. Therefore, in terms of climate protection the exact origins of the emissions are irrelevant as are the specific locations where emission avoidance takes place. Mondi supports those countries that are most affected by climate change. We invest in energyefficiency and biomass projects in our operations in Europe and all over the world. The Kyoto mechanisms like CDM and JI aim to support projects in developing countries.
How to get a CO2 neutral product?
Recycling & CO2
In a properly sustainable process, it is important that carbon should remain combined with its biomass (the raw organic material that in the case of paper production is wood fibre) for as long as possible before released through burning. For us, this means recycling.
Using recycled fibres allows carbon to remain combined for longer, benefiting the climate and the environment. This means that recycled fibres are a perfect complement to primary fibres. They both should be used in an ecologically responsible way, however, bearing in mind the whiteness, stiffness and hygiene needs of our products.
Our NAUTILUS products are made entirely of recycled fibres, and we also use recycled fibres in our IQ TRIOTEC® unique and MAESTRO® TRIOTEC® TCF papers. Our patented TRIOTEC® ‘sandwich’ technology enables us to use recycled fibres as a middle layer between high-quality primary fibres. Both TRIOTEC® products combine outstanding feeding properties with with high environmental performance.
