Management approach
We aim to create solutions for our customers' success, delivering exceptional value in a sustainable way. To achieve this we:
- build on our leading positions in packaging and uncoated fine paper (UFP), particularly in emerging markets;
- maintain our position as a low-cost, high-quality producer in our key markets by selectively investing in production capacity in lower-cost regions, and exploiting the benefits of upstream integration, including forestry; and
- focus on continuous business productivity improvement and cost reduction, delivered through business excellence programmes and rigorous asset management.
We recognise the need to integrate sound corporate governance with effective management of our societal and environmental impacts. This will ensure that we deliver sustainable long-term value to all our stakeholders - shareholders, employees, customers and the communities in which we operate. See the section: Engaging with stakeholders.
Our economic footprint is significant, with production and marketing spanning developed and developing economies in 31 countries and on four continents.
At the end of 2010, the Mondi group employed 29,000 people (2009: 31,000), with production operations across 31 countries (2009: 31). Mondi owns or leases around 312,000 hectares of land in South Africa, of which 203,000 hectares are planted with hardwoods (mainly eucalyptus) and softwoods (mainly pine). We also lease and manage 2.1 million hectares of mainly softwood forests in Russia.
Our business is highly integrated through the entire product life cycle, from responsible development and management of forests, to production and marketing of a variety of paper and packaging products and, finally, to the recycling of paper and packaging, as well as other products. See the section: Our company and our products.
