Drei Papiermaschinen sowie eine Zellstofftrocknungsanlage produzieren hochqualitative Verpackungspapiere und Spezialmarktzellstoff. Der Großteil der Produkte wird an den zwei Sackkraftpapiermaschinen PM6 und PM8 produziert, einseitig glatte Spezialkraftpapiere werden auf der PM7 hergestellt.
Eine innovative Zellstofftechnologie stellt die Grundlage für eine exzellente Qualität der Papierproduktion dar. Die Papiermaschinen sind mit State-of-the-art Technologie ausgestattet.

Der Standort dient als Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum für die gesamte Mondi Gruppe.
Im R&D Innovation Center, dem Bag Application Center und dem Food Safety Laboratory wurden bereits zahlreiche Produktneuheiten entwickelt und getestet.

Das Papier- und Zellstoffwerk betreibt eine eigene Betriebskindertagesstätte für die Kinder der Mitarbeiter*innen, finanziert das „Lerncafe` Mondi“ an den Mittelschulen St. Gertraud und Wolfsberg und fördert werksnahe Organisationen, wie die Werkskapelle Mondi Frantschach, die Feuerwehr Frantschach und örtliche Sportvereine.

Mondi Frantschach wurde mehrfach mit Auszeichnungen und Preisen geehrt. Neben dem TRIGOS und diversen Forschungspreisen auch mit der renommierten Auszeichnung ALC – Austrias Leading Company.

Innovation aus Tradition

Die industrielle Tradition des Standortes reicht – als Eisenhammerwerk – bis in das 16. Jahrhundert zurück. Dank des Holzreichtums der Region wurde 1881 unter Graf Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck die Produktion auf Zellstoff umgestellt und bereits 1894 ging die erste Papiermaschine in Betrieb. Das Werk war bis 1998 unter dem Namen Patria Papier & Zellstoff AG zur Gänze im Besitz der Familie Hartmann/Kaufmann und Teil der Frantschach Gruppe. 2004 wurde die Frantschach Gruppe von Mondi übernommen. Bis dahin firmierte das Werk unter Frantschach Pulp & Paper Austria AG. Seit 2008 nennt sich das Papier- und Zellstoffwerk Mondi Frantschach GmbH.

Weitreichende Modernisierungen im Laufe der Jahre, wie die Großumbauten 1990 an der PM 8 und 2000 an der PM 6, sowie stetige Investitionen in die Modernisierung der Produktionsanalagen gewährleisten höchste Qualitätsstandards. Mit dem R&D Innovation Centers, dem BAG Application Center und dem Food Safety Laboratory hat Mondi den Standort Frantschach als gruppenweites Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum gestärkt. Seit 2012 ist das Werk durch die Errichtung des Laugenverbrennungskessels RB4 vollkommen energieautark.

Zertifizierungen

Seit 1998 ist Mondi Frantschach gemäß ISO 14001 zertifiziert. Das Umweltmanagementsystem ist ein integrierter Bestandteil des Betriebes. Zusätzlich ist das Werk nach ISO 9001 (Qualitätsmanagementsystem) und ISO 45001 (Arbeitsschutzmanagementsystem) zertifiziert. Ein regelmäßig überarbeitetes EDV-unterstütztes Rechtsregister sowie qualifizierte Mitarbeiter stellen sicher, dass alle gesetzlichen Vorgaben und behördlichen Auflagen eingehalten werden.

Das Holz für die Produktion wird überwiegend aus österreichischen Wäldern bezogen und ist nach PEFC und FSC zertifiziert.

EN 15593 (Hygienemanagementsystem) garantiert die Verwendung von Papier und Zellstoff für Lebensmittelverpackungen.

Strong partner in the region
The town of Frantschach has always had close historical ties with the mill and its development, and the infrastructure benefits the local population. By providing support to community projects and by sponsoring sports and cultural events, the mill makes an active contribution to community life in the town and the region as a whole.
Mondi Frantschach has its own company daycare centre for employees’ children; it finances the Mondi Lerncafé at the secondary schools in St. Gertraud and Wolfsberg; and it provides support for organisations with ties to the mill, for example the Mondi Frantschach light orchestra, the Frantschach fire brigade and local sports clubs.

Mondi Frantschach has received numerous awards and prizes, including a TRIGOS award for corporate social responsibility and various research prizes, and it has ranked No. 1 in the Austria’s Leading Companies awards.

An innovative company with a long history

The location has a long history as an industrial site: as early as the 16th century, it was the site of a blacksmith’s works. As the region is densely forested, in 1881 Count Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck converted operations to pulp, and the first paper machine was set up in 1894. In the period to 1998, operating under the name Patria Papier & Zellstoff AG, the mill was wholly owned by the Hartmann/Kaufmann family and part of the Frantschach Group. In the period to 2004, the company name was Frantschach Pulp & Paper Austria AG; during that year the Frantschach Group was acquired by Mondi. Since 2008, the mill has operated under the name Mondi Frantschach GmbH.

Major upgrades have taken place over the years. The PM8 underwent an extensive rebuild in 1990, and the PM6 in 2000. Ongoing investments in production system upgrades guarantee top quality. The R&D Innovation Centre, the Bag Application Centre and the Food Safety Laboratory create a solid basis for research and development for the Mondi Group as a whole. Since 2012, when the RB4 recovery boiler was set up, the mill has been fully energy self-sufficient.

Certifications

Mondi Frantschach has been ISO 14001 certified since 1998, and its environmental management system forms an integral part of operations. The mill also holds ISO 9001 (quality management system) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management) certifications. The mill’s electronic legal register is updated on an ongoing basis, and highly qualified staff monitor compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations.

Most wood for production is from Austrian forests and is PEFC and FSC certified.

Paper and pulp used for food packaging fulfils the requirements of EN 15593 (hygiene management system).
