Mondi Świecie S.A. is a leading European containerboard producer, founded in the 1960s. The mill is a major regional employer, providing employment to more than 1,200 people and indirectly supporting the livelihoods of many more local suppliers and contractors. The mill underwent its second SEAT assessment in September 2019. Stakeholders interviewed included: employees and management; suppliers and contractors; contractor employees; trade unions; local authorities; neighbours and communities; media; educational institutions; NGOs and charity organisations.
The process was well-received by stakeholders, with positive reference made to:
Mondi as a secure, safe and stable place to work;
high safety standards and awareness, robust safety systems and improving contractor safety;
good communication, acknowledged by communities, authorities, trade unions, media, contractors and suppliers;
environmental emissions (including odour) have improved since Mondi took over the site; and
Mondi’s social investments and initiatives were highly praised, especially in support of education.
Opportunities for development included:
improving work-life balance, especially for shift workers, and retirement- and succession planning;
improved recognition, reward and development planning for managers;
improved communication with employees, including deeper communication, engagement and transition on new safety requirements; and
more active and faster communication of environmental performance and social initiatives to communities, the media, etc.
