The business case for Mondi’s involvement. The risks it will help mitigate and the opportunities it will create:

Implementing the Mondi Group safe paper machine minimum requirements at different areas in the paper machine through technological investments to significantly reduce the safety risks when operating the paper machine and improving paper machine efficiency.

  1. Reducing risk to exposure of moving and rotating machinery when tail threading from the last drying cylinder to the pope reel (manual threading to automatic threading)

  2. Reducing risk to exposure of moving and rotating machinery when operating the re-winder and reel-handling system, including: To eliminate exposing operators hands to moving and rotating parts, eliminating the hazards during manual transport of reels, eliminating presence of people in to reel handling area, eliminating manual lifting of reels by telfer crane

  3. Reducing risk to exposure of moving and rotating machinery during fabric tensioning including: To implement operator free fabric tensioning to eliminate exposing operators hands and arms to moving and rotating machinery hazards during manual adjustment and eliminate operator exposure to a hot work environment

  4. Reducing risk to exposure of moving and rotating machinery during maintenance vibration, temperature monitoring and machine greasing activities including: To eliminate exposing fitter hands and arms to moving and rotating machinery hazards during manual adjustment activities and to a hot work environment

The purpose of the investments were to:

  1. Eliminate manual tail threading by installing a rope less threading system on pope reel in Paper Machine 2. This significantly improved safety in the area of pope and eliminate any manual activities during threading, stabilizes the paper tail during machine threading, replaces the mechanical cutting knife in front of pope reel and improves threading efficiency in the pope area.

  2. Ensure safe operation of the re-winder and reel-handling system was achieved by installing new core-chucks with locking system, a lowering table with locking system and new locking rider roll system, vibration-sensors for speed reduction, light safety barrier with remote control and software upgrade according EU requirements. Additionally a reel handling and transport system with new guarding fences was installed.

  3. Install operator free fabric tensioning including online tension measurement, automatic tension adjustment and stable felt tension.

  4. Installed online vibration, temperature monitoring and remote machine greasing activities.

Results:

  1. This investment resulted in operator free tail threading, eliminating exposure of operator’s hands and arms to moving and rotating machinery hazards.

  2. The re-winder and reel-handling investment eliminated exposing operators hands to moving and rotating parts, manual transport of reel, presence of people in to reel handling area and manual lifting of reels by telfer crane

  3. The operator free fabric tensioning investment eliminated exposing operators hands and arms to moving and rotating machinery hazards during manual adjustment and exposure to hot environment

  1. The online measuring and greasing systems resulted in eliminating exposure of fitter hands and arms to moving and rotating machinery hazards and exposure to a hot work environment

  1. Eliminate manual tail threading by installing a rope less threading system on pope reel in Paper Machine 2.

  2. Re-winder and reel-handling system

  3. Online temperature and vibration monitoring and automatic greasing
