A unique, previously unused solution enabled Biedronka to collect over 29 million returnable bottles, even before automated reverse vending machines were installed in stores.

Introduced nationwide, the solution enables efficient collection of returnable packaging while offering a cost-effective and scalable alternative to traditional systems. Recyklobox has also proven to be a fast and practical way to implement deposit system collection across a retail network that has been steadily expanding its fleet of reverse vending machines.

A practical response to new market requirements

Developed jointly by Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, and Biedronka, one of Poland’s largest supermarket chains, Recyklobox responds to the need for flexible and rapidly deployable infrastructure in retail.

Recyklobox is a specially designed container for collecting returnable packaging. It is made from durable five-layer corrugated board and consists of a lower collection compartment and a lid equipped with an opening for inserting bottles, as well as a corrugated fitting enabling scanner installation.

Sustainable by design

The material composition - 80% recycled paper and 20% fresh fibre - supports circularity and aligns with both companies’ sustainability commitments. The solution can be reprocessed at the end of its lifecycle, reducing its environmental impact.

“At Mondi, we aim to develop solutions that go beyond packaging and support the evolving needs of modern retail. Recyklobox combines functionality, sustainability and rapid implementation,” said Mateusz Buchowiecki, National Key Account Manager at Mondi.

Fast implementation and proven effectiveness

A key advantage of Recyklobox is its simplicity and ease of deployment. The solution is easy to transport and assemble, enabling quick rollout across multiple retail locations.

Importantly, this unique and previously unused solution enabled Biedronka to collect 29,152,902 returnable bottles by the end of March, even before automated reverse vending machines were installed in stores, ensuring early readiness and operational continuity ahead of full system implementation.

“Recyklobox demonstrates how innovation can go hand in hand with responsibility. Together with Mondi, we have implemented a solution that allows us to respond quickly and efficiently to new legal requirements,” added Katarzyna Grabarska from Biedronka.

Building on a strong partnership

The launch marks another milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Mondi and Biedronka. Building on previous joint initiatives, including a closed-loop programme, the new solution reflects both companies’ commitment to combining operational efficiency with environmental responsibility and advancing more sustainable retail models in Poland.
