Ten years of PERGRAPHICA® – three questions marking a milestone anniversary

With its “anniversary questionnaire”, Packreport - a German trade publication for the packaging industry - recognises companies and products celebrating a milestone. Here, we look back at PERGRAPHICA®’s beginnings, where it stands today and what may come next.

Answering the questions is Stephanie Kienapfel, Head of Marketing and Business Development in Mondi’s Uncoated Fine Paper business.

THEN: “PERGRAPHICA®” began “as a carefully curated selection of three white design papers”. What were they intended for? Are they still part of the range?

PERGRAPHICA® was originally created for ideas that deserve to move from screen to page with precision, tactility and lasting impact. It began as a carefully curated range of premium uncoated white design papers for creative and corporate design, premium publishing and other high-end print applications where colour, surface and feel matter. The original white papers were designed to give printers, creatives and brand owners a premium material for projects where paper is not just a background, but part of the idea itself. Today, PERGRAPHICA® has grown into a broader spectrum of premium design papers, while that original purpose remains unchanged: helping standout ideas take tangible form.

TODAY: Your target groups include the areas of “creative design” and “premium packaging”. You, too, face the challenge of serving these areas within the new constraints of the PPWR: monomaterials, recyclability and minimisation requirements. Is this working?

Yes, but it requires close collaboration across the value chain and a clear understanding of what the right paper can contribute. PERGRAPHICA® is used in areas such as creative design, premium publishing and luxury packaging, where material choice, colour, surface and print performance are central to the final result. In packaging especially, PERGRAPHICA® supports applications where paper-based materials can help create distinctive brand experiences while meeting expectations around quality, design and mindful production. The focus is on enabling customers to choose materials that combine the right look and feel with increasingly careful material decisions.

LOOKING AHEAD: You want to continue “supporting design-oriented printing with materials that combine haptics, print quality and responsible production”. Do you consider “PERGRAPHICA®” recycled papers possible in the foreseeable future? Or is this becoming less likely given the declining quality of recovered paper, as the industry has complained?

We are always looking at how PERGRAPHICA® can continue to support design-oriented print with materials that combine haptics, print quality and mindful production. Recycled-content papers are an important topic for the industry. With our NAUTILUS brand, we already offer a very broad portfolio of high-white premium papers that are valued by customers across Europe for their excellent print quality. Therefore, there is currently no reason or plan to develop PERGRAPHICA® recycled paper grades.
