Role Summary:

The Technical Director is accountable for defining and driving the technical strategy and asset blueprint for the Containerboard and Uncoated Fine Paper businesses, covering 8 pulp and paper mills across Poland, Italy, Finland, Turkey, South Africa, Slovakia, and Austria, with an annual production of approximately 4,500 kt.

This role establishes how the business operates technically: defining the multi year, cross mill roadmap for technologies, assets, and capital investments required to run safer, more reliable, more sustainable, and more competitive mills - consistently and at scale. It leads the long term technology roadmap, asset strategy, and systemic technical improvements, ensuring that capital is deployed in a disciplined, standardised, and value creating way across the mill portfolio.

The role is part of a global team of CAPEX, project, technical, and maintenance specialists and acts as the technical authority across the Business Unit. The Technical Director reports to the CEO Corrugated Packaging, with a dotted line to both the COO Containerboard and the Head of of Group Technical & Sustainability, ensuring alignment on technical standards, technology roadmaps, and major capital investment decision.

The role leads a small team of technical specialists and works closely with Mill Managing Directors, Operations Directors, and Group Technical leadership to drive technical excellence across the mill network. Success in this role depends on strong collaboration across Containerboard and Uncoated Fine Paper and Group Technical, balancing business specific needs with Group wide technical coherence and scale benefits.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Technical Strategy & Asset Blueprint
    • Define and own the multi year technical and asset strategy for the BU’s paper and pulp mills co developed and aligned with Group Technical leadership, translating business, sustainability, and operational objectives into a clear, executable technology roadmap.
    • Establish the technology blueprint that defines how mills will evolve in terms of process design, equipment, automation, energy systems, maintenance concepts, and reliability standards.
  • Capital Allocation & Portfolio Leadership
    • Lead the CAPEX portfolio end to end, including prioritisation, sequencing, and technical validation of investments across mills in close collaboration with Group Technical to ensure alignment with Group technology standards.
    • Ensure capital is allocated to projects that deliver the highest technical, economic, and strategic value, while avoiding bottlenecks and maximising portfolio competitiveness.
    • Develop and challenge investment business cases, ensuring technical soundness, lifecycle value, and risk transparency.
  • Standardisation & Technical Governance
    • Define and “hard code” how investment projects are executed, including governance models, risk assessment standards, and decision frameworks.
    • Drive standardisation of technologies, suppliers, and equipment platforms where this delivers safety, reliability, and cost advantages.
    • Implement uniform technical documentation, engineering standards, and commissioning procedures across all CAPEX projects.
    • Oversee how technical risks are assessed and managed, including supplier and OEM interfaces.
  • Technology Development & Innovation
    • Evaluate and introduce new and emerging technologies (e.g. equipment and process innovations, digitalisation and automation, energy efficiency, fibre optimization etc.)
    • Ensure innovation is purpose driven, focused on optimisation, robustness, and value creation - not technology for its own sake.
  • Technical Authority & Cross Mill Leadership
    • Serve as the primary technical authority on paper technology, process design, energy systems, maintenance strategies, and mill reliability, within the framework of Group Technical standards, policies, and governance.
    • Advise and support Mill Managing Directors and Operations Directors on cross mill technical improvements and technical decision making.
    • Act as the interface between Group Technical & Sustainability, who are the custodians of operating procedures and practices (= Mondi Management System), while execution ownership remains with the Mill Managing and Operations Directors.
  • Capability Building & Talent Development
    • Shape the long term technical capability agenda partnering with business leadership and HR to define minimum technical competency models and development pathways.
    • Coach technical specialists, fostering strong technical judgment, accountability, and collaboration.

Your Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education
    • Master’s degree in Process Engineering or Pulp & Paper Technology
  • Professional Experience
    • 15+ years of professional experience in senior technical, capital investment, operations & projects roles within the global pulp and paper industry.

    • Deep, hands on understanding of paper mill operations, including process technology, asset lifecycles, reliability, and maintenance concepts.
    • Experience working across multiple mills and geographies, managing complexity and competing priorities at portfolio level.
  • Leadership & Professional Capabilities
    • Strong business acumen, with the ability to align technical decisions with commercial, operational, and sustainability objectives.
    • A strong focus on optimisation and value creation, combining deep technical expertise with discipline execution, lifecycle thinking, and continuous improvement rather than a purely technology driven or novelty focused mindset.
    • Demonstrated ability to engage confidently with both senior leaders and mill teams.

    • Highly developed communication, influencing, and diplomacy skills, with the ability to present clear, logical, and audience appropriate arguments.
