“If you want to change something, first you need to understand how it works”

From pharmaceuticals to rail-siding operations, Agnieszka Bartz has built her career on moving things forward. Since joining Mondi Świecie in 2017, she has grown into the role of Rail Transport Manager, leading operations at one of the region’s key industrial rail sites. Today, she oversees rail-siding operations for paper, wood and biomass, manages a diverse team and drives initiatives that enhance efficiency, safety and sustainability.

I’ve always believed that growth begins outside your comfort zone.

When my second maternity leave was coming to an end, I decided to look for new challenges. I had previously worked in pharmaceutical logistics and felt it was time for something new. I knew Mondi was a company where many good people worked. So when a logistics position at the Świecie containerboard mill opened up, I decided to give it a try, and that’s how it all began.

I began by managing wood transport to paper mills across Central Europe. It was my first experience with rail transport; until then, my work had focused entirely on road logistics. But I quickly became fascinated. I joined a cross-site project team focused on optimising deliveries, which was an intense period of learning. Later, when I took on train scheduling responsibilities, we introduced improvements that still make our operations more efficient today.

Stepping into the world of rail transport opened up a whole new world for me.

In 2021, I was offered a new role – this time focusing entirely on rail-siding operations and service for inbound and outbound railway traffic – a real turning point. I gained insight into new processes and infrastructure and connected with new colleagues across the business. And somewhere along the way, I fell in love with the job.

For the past three years, I’ve managed daily rail-siding operations, which involves careful planning, coordination and teamwork. Our work ranges from delivering raw materials to shipping finished paper reels, and from monitoring wagon movements to overseeing essential maintenance. Ensuring that everything runs safely and smoothly is at the heart of what we do. Rail operations inherently involve risk, which is why safety is our constant priority.

Behind every smooth operation is a team that never stops moving.

Our shunting crew, track maintenance team and locomotive depot each play an essential part in keeping operations flowing. Every stage – from planning and loading to dispatch – relies on precise coordination. None of it would be possible without the skilled people who make sure everything stays on track.

When I first arrived, I knew very little about rail-specific regulations or the technical aspects of track and locomotive work. I learned everything step by step, supported by colleagues who generously shared their knowledge. Today, I feel confident in my role because I understand every part of the system.

Change doesn’t just happen – you have to drive it forward.

One achievement I’m especially proud of is helping to modernise parts of our rolling stock and equipment. Introducing new technology has made our operations more flexible and efficient and has supported our ongoing efforts to reduce our environmental impact. These developments give our team more tools to work safely and effectively while preparing us for the logistical challenges of the future.

Sustainability is a core value for me. Rail transport is generally more environmentally friendly than road transport, and our goal is to make the most of that advantage. This means ensuring our processes are modern, safe and increasingly automated where it makes sense. These improvements not only support our sustainability ambitions but also make everyday tasks easier for our team.

Leadership begins with trust.

When I first stepped into a managerial role, I knew I had to build strong relationships from the ground up. Our team brings together many different personalities and areas of expertise, and although rail is traditionally a male-dominated field, I never felt out of place. Over time, through open communication and shared experiences, we built mutual trust. Today, I know I can rely on my team, and I hope they feel they can rely on me too.

My family is my source of energy outside of work. My two children and I love escape rooms, puzzles and orienteering – activities that challenge us to think creatively and solve problems together. I also have a long-standing connection to sport and music, from rhythmic gymnastics and basketball to singing in a choir. These experiences taught me discipline, perseverance and the satisfaction of pushing beyond your limits.

Every challenge is an opportunity to grow – individually and as a team.

Logistics constantly keeps us on our toes, requiring adaptability and clear thinking. I thrive when a lot is going on, and I embrace change as a chance to improve. For me, success isn’t just about the outcome; it’s also about the journey, the teamwork and what we create along the way.

I’m proud to support innovation, modernisation and continuous improvement. We always give our very best – with ambition, responsibility and heart. And that’s what motivates me to come to work every day, knowing that what we do genuinely makes a difference.
