From Risk to Resilience: How Mondi Is Redefining Fire Safety in Forestry

• Wildfires are a growing threat to forestry worldwide, and the 2024 season underlined this reality. South Africa endured one of its most severe fire seasons on record, with 2,750 firefighting teams deployed, 34 lives lost, and thousands of livestock destroyed. 
• Recognising that wildfires remain an inherent and potentially fatal risk within Mondi Forestry Operations, the organisation leveraged its established control measures to mitigate losses during 2024. Furthermore, the Mondi leadership team adopted a proactive, multidisciplinary approach to strengthen fire protection strategies for 2025, supporting continuous improvement and resilience.

The 2025 Forestry Fire Strategy is built on five pillars: 

Key enhancements in 2025  

• Fuel Load Reduction: Mulching reduced fuel loads under trees to less than 10 tonnes per hectare.  
• Fleet Modernisation: New and refurbished fire trucks now include advanced safety features such as thermal curtains and bumper turrets.  
• Health and Wellness: Enhanced fitness and mental resilience programmes ensure firefighters are ready for the challenge.  
• Training Excellence: Upgraded training materials and audits improved response speed and competency. 
• Water Conservation and Technology: Compressed air foam systems and precision forestry technology boosts efficiency and safety.  
• Emergency Communication: Digital platforms improved connectivity in areas with poor network coverage. 
• Community Engagement: Awareness campaigns strengthened local readiness and cooperation.  

Results that matter  

Despite 1,072 wildfires in 2025, every Mondi team member returned home safely after every event. This is a testament to our proactive planning, innovation, and unwavering commitment.
