Michal Benco, Junior Business Unit Controller

A trainee´s journey: Word(w)rap with Michal from Group office Vienna!

My trainee program journey started in Group office Vienna where I was part of the Uncoated Fine Paper Controlling team. I was introduced to various areas of controlling, planning and accounting. I supported the team with detailed data analysis, monthly financial reporting and participated in the outlook, budget and year-end closing process. After 8 months I relocated to Mondi SCP Ruzomberok (Slovakia) where I worked in the accounting department and later in controlling. In total I was part of the trainee program for 1.5 years. Currently I work in the Group office Vienna as a Junior Controller of our Business Unit Engineered Materials.

I came across Mondi by… as a fresh graduate I was looking for my first full-time job. When I found the job advertisement of the International Finance Trainee at Mondi, it immediately attracted my attention. After the interview rounds with the management and HR I felt that this is the right path for me and I decided to become part of the Mondi Group.

I studied ...my Bachelor’s degree at the Silesian university, Faculty of Business Administration in Karvina, Czech Republic. My field of study was around Business Economics in Trade and Services. Afterwards I did my Master’s degree at the University of Zilina, Faculty of Management Science and Informatics, Slovakia. Field of study: Information Management

What I like most about Mondi is…Mondi is a successful and stable company, full of inspiring people and I am glad to be part of it. Collaboration with various companies across the globe always brings new and exciting challenges to work on. That´s the best part in my work.

What I like most about my career since being graduated is…having the opportunity to work in various departments across Mondi. It was inspiring to be part of an international team in Vienna but also very useful to spend couple of months in one of our mills, SCP Ruzomberok, to see how processes work directly in paper mill.

My greatest challenge during the beginning of my career was…as a trainee in Mondi you receive really a lot of information. At the beginning it might be quite challenging to understand all the relations between various processes, but with more experience and time spent in a company you will start to become more familiar with everything.

My advice for students that just graduated…Try to find the job which you enjoy. Ask a lot of questions, try to learn from others as much as you can and always remember to stay optimistic.

My future career path leads me to…It is never easy to predict the future, but I would like to stay in the Finance field. My main goal is to fully focus on the position I am currently at and we will see what future brings. :)
