Net-Zero Targets

We are dedicated to reducing our CO₂e emissions and reaching our Net-Zero targets to limit global warming.

Scaling climate action across the value chain

The climate crisis is the most urgent risk facing society and businesses must take decisive action to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Mondi is committed to play its part in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improving energy efficiency, shifting to renewable energy sources and working with value chain partners.

Our science-based Net-Zero targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2022.

Our targets covering GHG emissions from our operations and supply chain (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) are consistent with a reduction required to keep global warming to 1.5°C.

  • Near-term targets

Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 46.2% and Scope 3 GHG emissions by 27.5% by 2030
    (from a 2019 baseline)

  • Long-term target

Reduce absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050
    (from a 2019 baseline)

CEO statement

"The approval of our science-based Net-Zero targets according to the SBTi Net-Zero Standard underlines our long-term commitment to taking action on climate. Mondi has already made significant progress, achieving a 46% reduction of our specific CO₂e emissions to 2021 against our initial 2004 baseline. We are pleased to be among the first in our sector to have approved Net-Zero targets and recognise that much more needs to be done swiftly and urgently as we move towards a low-carbon, circular economy."

Our track record

We have a long track record of investing in our operations and reducing our carbon footprint. Since 2015 we have made strategic energy-related investments totalling €650 million across our pulp and paper mills. Our pulp and paper mills are largely electricity self-sufficient and we generate most of our energy needed on site.

SBTí statement

"Climate science tells us that we need rapid and deep emissions cuts if we are to achieve global net-zero and prevent the most damaging effects of climate change. Mondi’s net-zero targets match the urgency of the climate crisis and set a clear example that their peers must follow.”
